Welcome to You Ask Andy

Edward Wash, age 9, of Devon, Com , for his question:

How big is a star?

It would be hard to answer someone who asked how big is an animal, for there are big whales and tiny mice. A building may be a small cottage or a towering skyscraper. The stars also come in different sizes. The small stars are about as large as our planet, the Earth. The medium sized ones are as big as our starry sun  which is big enough to swallow our world a million times and still have room for a helping of dessert.

Our sun is really a medium sized star, just like many other medium stars in the sky. There are stars big enough to swallow hundreds of stars like our sun. And there are a few whoppers that have room for thousands of sun sized stars. Some are big enough to fill up many of the wide spaces between the planets of the solar system.
