Wanda Koser, age 13, of Montoursville, Pa., for her question:
How many eyes does a bee have?
The bee has five eyes. Two large compound eyes occupy the sides of her small head, and three small simple eyes are set between them. The amazing compound eyes are honeycombed with numbers of small lenses, each of which captures an image of the scenery. These large compound eyes give the bee a multiple picture of what goes on around her. The small simple eyes are placed at the three corners of a triangle, and their purpose seems to be to reflect the light. When they are covered with paint the bee is slower to react to a bright light. Most creatures seem unable to distinguish colors as we do, but experiments seem to indicate that the bee can distinguish red, blue, gray and perhaps a few other colors.
