Wesley Freedle, age 8, of Coffeyville, Kan., for his question:
Who gives the money for the Nobel Prizes?
The man who invented dynamite made a fabulous fortune. His name was Alfred Nobel, and he thought his dynamite would put an end to warfare. Such a terrible weapon of destruction, he thought, would make men afraid to use it to wage war upon each other. Alfred Nobel was wrong about this, but he tried hard to make men see that war is wrong and that they should strive hard for peace.
He left his great fortune to help science, thinking the more we would know of science the less likely we would be to fight and destroy each other. The money was invested to give interest year by year. The interest earned by Alfred Nobel’s fortune is the money used for the Nobel Prizes.
