Michele Robillard, age 8, of Hilton, New York, for her question:
Where do we get licorice?
Licorice just happens to be one of Andy's favorite candy flavors. The tangy taste is delicious in those long black ropes of whip licorice or in flat black squares mixed with layers of other goodies. It keeps its pleasant taste in cough drops, soothing syrups and even in bitter medicines. The wonderful stuff comes from the juice squeezed from the long roots of the licorice plant.
Sad to say we do not grow the licorice plant in America, so all of our supplies are brought from the old world. Most of the world's licorice comes from plants grown in Turkey. The candy flavoring plant also is grown in parts of Italy and India, Iraq and Spain.
