Mark Boben, age 11, of Duluth, Minn., for his question:
How high is the Eiffel Tower?
Its iron feet stand on a base of 330 square feet, and its iron pylon reaches 984 feet above the ground. It was built by the famous French engineer, alexandre GU9tavE Eiffel, and named the Eiffel Tower in his honor. The famous landmark of Paris was built for the Exposition of 1889, and it stands up straight. And tall on the Champs de Mars. The old fair grounds at its feet have long since been converted to landscaped parks, restaurants and gardens and streets of fine houses.
Seven thousand tons of iron and steel were used to build it, and the famous tower cost more than a million dollars. There are stairways and Elevators leading up to tower platforms. In its first year, the sale of tickets to the top more than paid for the cost of the tall tower.
