Welcome to You Ask Andy

Gary Kuhne, age l0, of Sarasota, Fla., for his question:

What do I feed my pet squirrel?

The little charmer is not a strict vegetarian. However, he is mighty fond of nuts and leafy greens. Feed him scraps of salad along with leafy twigs from the trees that grow in his natural surroundings. sometimes give him a dessert treat of blackberries or blueberries or other fruit that grows wild in the woods. Give him generous helpings of nuts, but do not remove the sells for him. He enjoys beech and hickory nuts, walnuts and acorns.

As for the meat on his diet, choose small items. Find a few crickets and grasshoppers for him. In the wild he eats insects and sometimes small frogs. If you cannot go out hunting for him, let him sample crumbs of hamburger and other meat scraps until he finds a kind he enjoys. He is a friendly fellow and he soon learns to accept his food from your hand.
