Elizabeth Anderson, age 13, of Portland Maine, for her question :
What makes a bee hum ?
The busy bee does most of her traveling on four little wings, Since she only hums while in flight, we can guess that the buzzing is caused by her wings, and so it is.
Her wings beat through the air, maybe 100 times each second. Though small, they set up vibrations as the air particles are disturbed and jostle each other. We hear these vibrations as the humming sound. The buzz is made by the speed of those fragile wings, slicing through the air anywhere from 200 to 400 times a second. The bee it seems: is not called busy for nothing.
