Welcome to You Ask Andy

Stephen Avellar, age 11, of Vallejo, C~a 3. f~o rn ,for MT‑question:

Where is Lundy Island?

Lundy Island is shown as a small dot on a sizeable map of England and England is a small country. If you look closely, you will find it off the west coast of England, below the bulge that is the small country of `dales. Here the Irish Sea bites a big estuary called the Bristol Channel. The beautiful river Severn glides through western England to empty into this channel.

The north bank of the channel laps at the shores of Southern Wales., the south at the county of Devon. We look for the little isle of Lundy along this southern bank. There it is, several miles from the shore, standing firmly among the choppy waves of the Irish Sea. The little island, no more than a few miles wide, is a landmark for sailors approaching and leaving the big ports of Swansea and Bristol further up the narrowing estuary. In the days of the last Ice Age, this area may have been dry land and later, as the sea rose, it was probably riddled with small islands. Nowadays, the sea has swamped the area and Lundy Island is about all that remains.
