Judy Vick age 12, of Ashland City, Tenn., for her question;
Who are the gypsies?
The Gypsies are a fascinating family of people and somewhat mysterious. They have roamed Europe for a thousand years, traveling in gayly decorated, horse‑drawn caravans. The settled people thought these independent, carefree wanderers must have come from old Egypt, so they called them Gypsies. The Gypsies themselves had forgotten their original home.
However, they had kept their original language. Modern scholars say that Romany, the Gypsy language, comes from Sanscrit, an old language of India, This and certain customs, prove that the Gypsies came originally from India. With this as a start, we have been able to piece together the history of these people who forgot where they came from,
In the distant past, they were nomad people roaming over northwestern India. At the time Leif Ericson was finding America, these wanderers left India and ventured into Eastern Europe. Through the centuries they traveled through all of Europe and some of them came to America.
