Ellen Hill, age 10, of Victor B.C., ,.,for her question;
Were there ever penguins in the Arctic?
So far as we know, the penguin family has al«rays lived south of the equator. However, their name was given originally to a bird who lived in the North Atlantic. This was the great auk, now extinct. Sailors to southern seas thought the penguins wore relatives of the great auk, whom they called o penguin. They do resemble the stately old bird, though the two bird families are not related.
Penguins enjoy life where you and I would be miserable. Two hardy members of the family actually live on the icy edges of the Antarctic continent. The ground is always covered with glaciers and not a tree or a plant grows there, The wind is usually strong and cold and the temperature always freezing. Other penguins live along the shores and islands of South America.
The severe life; does not upset the happy., friendly character of the penguins. They are always on hand to greet visitors, standing upright in their neat black and white formal attire.
