Welcome to You Ask Andy

Rosie Freitas, age 12, of Visalia, California, for her question:

Who invented kites?

This wonderful invention was made more than 2,000 years ago    and two different countries claim the credit for it. The Chinese claim that their general Han Sin invented the kite, way back in the year 206 B.C. Most historians suspect that kite flying was invented even earlier in Greece. They tend to give the credit to Archytas of the ancient city of Tarentum. The date is thought to be sometime between 400 B.C. and 300 BC. Nobody can prove either story. But it is just possible that two people in different parts of the world had the same high flying idea    and made it work.

In any case, kite flying never went out of style. Rosie reports that it is her favorite hobby, even in the space age. Andy also loves this hobby and suggests that more people try it. Almost everybody is within walking distance of a suitable park or open space. Choose a breezy day, pack your kite and be sure to walk, not ride, to the spot    and get set to enjoy yourself.
