How big is Honduras?

The Central American country of Honduras is large enough to swallow the states of Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Hawaii. Its total area is 59,161 square miles. Its shape is a rough triangle fitted into the hump of Central America. The base of the triangle is the long northern shoreline which fronts on the Caribbean Sea. The two sides of the triangle taper southward across rough and mountainous country. They meet at the Pacific ocean where the shoreline of Honduras is about 50 miles long.

Honduras is home to about one and a half million people, most of whom live in the fertile strip of farmland along the northern shore. The capital city is Tegucigalpa in the central highlands. It is one of the few capital cities without a railroad.
