Is the Danube really blue?

The mighty Danube flows a distance of 1,750 miles through southern Europe from the Black Forest to the Black Sea. Along the way it changes its mood and color many times. It rushes through Alpine country and meanders through gentle plains. At one point, it plunges through a gloomy gap between the Balkan and Carpathian mountains,

The great river has played a vital role since before Roman times and its history is bound up with the history of the European peoples. It is at its most beautiful as it wanders from Vienna to Belgrade where it widens to a broad lake. And it is here that the beautiful blue of the Danube is really worth singing about.
