Welcome to You Ask Andy

Was there a real Robin Hood?

There are plenty of legends about this merry outlaw and many ballads have been sung about his daring exploits. But of his existence, there is no proof that the historians can accept, This, however, does not mean that there never was such a person. The people of Yorkshire point to a grave with a stone tablet to Robert, Earl of Huntington, known as Robin Hood. The tablet states that this hero died in 1247.

Some scholars, however, claim that the tablet was made in the 18th century. Ah, but it is a copy of an earlier stone that wore away, say the people of Yorkshire, So we are not sure. It is, however, most likely that a band of hero outlaws lived in Sherwood forest, though many of the tales about them have bean greatly exaggerated through the centuries.
