Why is air needed in a gas range?

The gas range has a pipe to let in the gas. It also has another pipe usually with a slotted vent, to let in air. The reason for this is that even a gas fed flame needs air, or the oxygen within the air, in order to burn. The air mixes with the gas and the two together burn.
