How did the craters fall on the moon?

A crater is a hole in the ground. It may be the deep hole in the middle of a volcano. It may be a hole made when something big and hard hits the earth. One such crater in Arizona is over a mile wide. It was made when a huge meteor fell out of the sky and hit the ground long ages ago.

The craters on the moon are thought to have been caused by such falling meteors. They show up well in telescope pictures and the moon has plenty of them. They range in size from a quarter of a mile to 150 miles across. Moon craters seem to be flat at the bottom with steep jagged sides. The sides may be two miles high. Sometimes a pinnacle sits in the flat bottom of one of these craters.

Because impact crater are eroded by water, wind and vegetaton, big craters of this sort are not readily visible here on the earth. So how come the moon got hit by so many falling rocks? There may be a reason. Thousands of little meteors hit the earth every day. Almost all of them burn to ashes as they crash through the air. The moon has no air. Any meteor that collides with the moon must land on the ground.
