Robbie Welsh. age 10.:

What country produces the most wheat?

Wheat is grown from near the Arctic Circle to the scorching dry lands of Ethiopia. This month it is being harvested in Italy. Turkey and the states of Kansas. California and the Carolinas. Next month is wheat harvest for the bumper crop of Canada and the northern and central areas of the United States.. South of the equator in Australia and the Argentine. the wheat harvest months are December and January. Egypt. Mexico and Cuba harvest their wheat in April and May. Every month is wheat harvest somewhere in the world.

The world’s most fruitful wheat areas. however. are the plains of Russia. and the vast. rich plains of North America. The production figures of Russia are hard to come by. even when it comes to wheat. In 1938. they are said to have harvested over 45 million tons. More up‑to‑date figures can be had from other countries. If we do not count the 'wheat of Russia. which is a mystery anyway. the United States heads the list. This country produces around 26 million tons of wheat each year. Next comes China with well over 20 million tons and France with well over 10 million tons. Canada. who was ahead of the United States between the world wars. now rates fourth on the list with around eight or nine million tons of wheat a year.
