Welcome to You Ask Andy

Georgiana Bradley, age 12, of St. Catharines, Ont,, for her question:

How old is Westminster Abbey2

The history of London's Westminster Abbey dates back to the year 960 AD. It was founded by Benedictine monks ands through the generations' it has become the shrine of some of England's most honored dead. There has been building and rebuilding through the years. Christopher Wren had a hand in designing the magnificent towers which guard the western entrance.

They are still repairing the damage done by Nazi bombs and the ancient walls are now in the process of getting a thorough cleaning. Andy visited the Abbey this summer. He saw the tombs of Edward the Confessor, good Queen Bess arid Mary, Queen of Scots. He saw the Poets Corners which has a bust of our own Longfellow. He saw the ancient wooden throne on which English monarchs have been crowned since the time of William the Conqueror.
