Welcome to You Ask Andy

Ted Komatz, age 12, of Monossezz, Penna., for his question:

Which butterfly migrates?

The life of every butterfly is divided into four distinct stages. Ho begins as an egg which hatches into a hungry caterpillar. The caterpillar becomes a sleepy pupa. The pupa develops and hatches into the adult winged butterfly. The butterfly is a fragile, delicate creature, unable to cope with the cold of winter. The caterpillar, too, cannot cope with the cold.

So most butterflies spend the winter in either the egg or pupa stage. A few adult, like the lovely mourning cloak, hibernate as adults. And ono bold butterfly dares to migrate. He is the handsome brown and orange monarch. Come fall, armies of these beauties fly south as far as the warm southwestern deserts.

Even so, many of them perish before spring arrives. Only a few of them, tired and ragged, are left to make the long journey north again.
