Welcome to You Ask Andy

Barbara Fox, aged 12, of Bridgepprt, Conn. for her question:

In what waters are goldfish found?

In about 1859, some goldfish escaped from their bowl into the Schuylkill river of Philadelphia, There they made themselves at home and multiplied, Back in the wild state, they lost their gold color and became drab silvery fellows like their wild ancestors. Goldfish can make a comfortable life for themselves in most streams and rivers,

However, they are not welcome in our streams and rivers. This is not only because they lose their handsome looks. They become pests.

Goldfish have no teeth. They grub up their food on the muddy floors of the rivers. They foul up the water and even make life difficult for other, more useful, fish.

The native home of the goldfish is in the streams and rivers of southern China. They are relatives of the carp fish. Most of them are plain silver in the wild state, However, once in a great while one shows up with yellow gold scales. These are the ones that have been developed for fancy fish bowls. The 0hinese have been selecting these fancy fellows for centuries. As everyone knows, many very handsome strains have been developed.

Though he is toothless, the goldfish will eat almost anything. That is, if his food is fed to him in stall enough pieces.
