Welcome to You Ask Andy

Chester Little, age 11, of Great Falls, Mont., f_or his question:

HOW FAR FROM WASHINGTON IS CAMP DAVID?

Camp David, the official retreat for Presidents of the United States, can be found in a heavily wooded area of the Catoctin Mountains in Maryland. It is located about 70 miles from Washington, D.C.

The retreat was established in 1942 by President Franklin D. Roosevelt, and he used it to escape Washington's summer heat. He called the beautiful spot Shangri La, a name he took from James Hilton's novel, "Lost Horizon."

President Harry Truman made Shangri La the official presidential retreat in 1945 and President Dwight D. Eisenhower renamed the camp  in 1953 for his five year old grandson, David.

President Eisenhower added a golf course. There already was a 1 swimming pool and other sports facilities.
