Welcome to You Ask Andy

Lynn Gibbons, age 7, of Cheyenne, Wy., for her question:

HOW MUCH DOES A LLAMA WEIGH?

A llama i s the largest member of the camel family that lives i n South America. It is a domesticated animal that was probably bred from the wild guanaco. The animal, that stands four feet tall at the shoulder and about five feet tall at the head, can weigh up to 210 pounds.

The llama is most useful as a pack animal. Each llama can carry up to about 100 pounds. They are sure footed on mountain trails and can travel from 15 to 20 miles each day with a full load.

Sometimes hundreds or even thousands of llamas are used to carry supplies on an engineering project.

Indians in South America use the llama to transport goods. They eat the meat of young animals and use the hair of the llama to make garments. The hide is used to make sandals.
