Tell me about Jefferson Davis

Jefferson Davies was inaugurated as the first president of the newly organized Confederate State of America in Montgomery, Alabama on Feb 18,1861.  He was a former United States Senator from Mississippi.  In his inaugural speech in affirmed that "governments rest on the consent of the governed" and called for an army and navy to prepare for the conflict.  The next year with the Civli War in full force he appointed Robert E. Lee leader of the Army in Northern Virginia as commander of the southern forces.  Jefferson Davis was captured  in 1865 and charged with treason, but was never tried.  He died at the age of 81 in 1889.
